Walking Therapy in Manchester

Sometimes being outdoors can help make things feel more manageable. Walking therapy takes place in quiet green spaces around North Manchester, giving you the chance to talk while moving at a gentle pace.

Some people find it easier to talk side by side, surrounded by nature. It can feel more relaxed, more natural, and less intense than sitting in a room. You don’t need to be especially fit or active. We’ll choose a route that works for you.

As with any session, the focus is on what matters to you. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck or unsure where to begin, we'll go at your pace and take it one step at a time.

If walking therapy sounds like something that might help, I’m here when you're ready.

Walking Therapy - Why Work with Me?

Walking therapy offers a different way to experience counselling. Being outdoors can create a sense of calm, space and movement that helps you feel more at ease.

I am a qualified counsellor and a registered member of the BACP. My approach is person-centred, which means we will always work with what feels most important to you. You can learn more about my background and qualifications here.

In walking sessions, we meet in a quiet outdoor location in North Manchester and walk at a gentle pace while we talk. Some people find it easier to speak side by side, without the pressure of eye contact. Others simply appreciate the rhythm of walking and the calming effect of being in nature.

You do not need to be especially fit or active. We will choose a route that feels right for you. The focus is not on distance or pace, but on giving you the time and space to reflect, explore and feel supported.

Understanding Walking Therapy

At Jodie James Counselling Services, I recognise the power of nature and its ability to enhance the therapeutic experience. That's why I'm delighted to offer walking counselling sessions, a unique approach that combines traditional therapy with the benefits of outdoor activity. My walking counselling maintains the same warm, compassionate, and personalised support as our other counselling formats, while incorporating the restorative qualities of nature.

Benefits of Walking Counselling

Walking counselling offers several advantages over traditional face-to-face and virtual sessions:

  1. Nature's Healing Power: Engaging in therapy outdoors can be a calming and grounding experience, allowing you to connect with your thoughts and emotions more deeply. The natural environment can help reduce stress, increase relaxation, and foster a sense of well-being.

  2. Physical Activity: Walking during therapy sessions promotes gentle exercise, which is known to improve mental health, boost mood, and increase overall well-being. The combination of physical activity and talk therapy can create a powerful and holistic approach to emotional healing.

  3. Informal Setting: Walking counselling provides a more relaxed atmosphere than traditional therapy settings, which some clients find less intimidating and more conducive to open, honest conversation.

Considerations for Walking Counselling

While walking counselling presents numerous benefits, it is essential to consider how this format compares to face-to-face, phone, and online sessions:

  1. Weather Dependence: Walking counselling is subject to weather conditions, which may require rescheduling sessions or opting for an alternative format in case of unsuitable outdoor circumstances.

  2. Privacy: Engaging in therapy outdoors may present potential privacy concerns, as you may encounter other people during your walk. It's important to consider your comfort level with discussing personal issues in a public setting.

  3. Mobility and Accessibility: Walking counselling may not be suitable for individuals with mobility challenges or physical limitations, making face-to-face, phone, or Zoom/video-call sessions more appropriate options.

When choosing the best counselling format for your needs and preferences, it's crucial to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each option. I'm dedicated to offering a variety of counselling approaches, ensuring that you can select the method that best supports your emotional well-being and personal growth journey.

If you're interested in walking counselling or would like to discuss which format may be the best fit for you, please don't hesitate to contact me at Jodie James Counselling Services. I'm here to provide compassionate, empathetic, and professional support, helping you navigate life's challenges and achieve your full potential.

My Therapeutic Approach

Every person is different, and so is every therapeutic relationship. I don’t come into sessions with a fixed agenda or set of answers. Instead, I take the time to understand what’s important to you and how we can work together in a way that feels helpful and respectful.

My approach is rooted in person-centred counselling. That means I’ll follow your lead, offering a space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment or pressure. You set the pace, and together we’ll make sense of whatever’s going on for you.

When it’s useful, I also draw on tools from Transactional Analysis (TA) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). These can help us look at patterns in the way you think, feel, or relate to others, and understand how those patterns may be affecting you now.

If you are looking for counselling in Manchester, I offer a calm, confidential space to explore what matters to you - at your pace, in your own words.

Ultimately, therapy is a shared process. I’ll bring warmth, honesty and professional insight, and you bring your experiences, however you’re carrying them. From there, we begin.

Walking Counselling FAQs

What is walking therapy?

Walking therapy is a form of counselling that takes place during a walk outdoors, typically in a park or natural setting. It combines the benefits of talk therapy with the physical and mental health benefits of walking and spending time in nature.

How does walking therapy differ from traditional counselling?

In traditional counselling, the sessions usually take place in a therapist's office, with the client and therapist seated. Walking therapy, on the other hand, involves walking and talking side-by-side in a natural setting, which can create a more relaxed and informal atmosphere, promoting open communication and reflection.

Who can benefit from walking therapy?

Walking therapy can be suitable for a wide range of people, including those who may feel more comfortable or open when in motion or outdoors. It can be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, or depression, as walking and spending time in nature have been shown to have positive effects on mental health.

What should I wear for walking therapy sessions?

Wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for walking outdoors. Dress appropriately for the weather and consider bringing a water bottle, sunscreen, or any other items needed for your comfort during the session.

What if it rains or the weather is bad?

In case of bad weather, your therapist may suggest rescheduling the session, moving the session indoors (if possible), or opting for an alternative counselling format, such as telephone or video therapy, for that particular session.

How long are walking therapy sessions?

Walking therapy sessions typically last for the same duration as traditional counselling sessions, approximately 50 minutes to an hour. However, the length may be adjusted based on your individual needs and preferences.

Will our conversations remain confidential during walking therapy?

Your therapist will make every effort to maintain confidentiality during walking therapy sessions by choosing quieter, more secluded walking routes and keeping a reasonable distance from others. However, it is important to be aware that complete privacy cannot be guaranteed in public spaces.

Can I combine walking therapy with other forms of counselling?

Yes, many people find it helpful to combine walking therapy with other forms of counselling, such as face-to-face, telephone, or video sessions. Talk to your therapist about the best approach for your individual needs and preferences.

How do I get started with walking therapy?

If you're interested in walking therapy or have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with Jodie James Counselling Services. We'll be happy to discuss your needs and help you determine if walking therapy is the right fit for you.
